Selling via Mobile: What’s Working Now

Posted by Araks Khachatryan on October 12th, 2011 at 5:29 am

As a mobile marketing company, businesses regularly ask us what exactly we're selling via mobile. It’s a simple question, but one of the most important ones to ask if you’re thinking about bringing your business into the mobile industry. No matter how you do it, you have to first be selling something consumers would purchase in order for your business to succeed.  My current work in mobile marketing has given me the experience first-hand, and below is some of my insight into what products and services are selling best via the mobile channel.

App Downloads

Not surprisingly, app downloads are very hot right now. The market is growing exponentially with mobile consumers downloading over two billion apps each month. With more than 500,000 apps in the Apple App Store alone, app developers have been looking at various mobile marketing methods to generate downloads and increase revenues. Cost-Per-Install models, such as those CornerBlue provides, allow these companies to only pay for legitimate downloads.

Consumers love free apps, which is why the “freemium” payment model is working so well. The apps themselves are free to download, increasing downloads substantially. Once inside the app, there are additional features or content that can be unlocked for a price. The customer has the opportunity to get to know the app for free while developers are given the opportunity to generate recurring revenue.

Lead Generation

We have seen the performance of lead generation forms increase substantially from a year ago, mainly because more people are using their phones to search for products and services. Mobile is the perfect medium for collecting quick contact information from potential customers. People often are interested in something they see, but the timing isn’t right. Getting their email or phone number allows you to reach back later when they might be more ready to buy.

The education vertical in particular has seen a substantial increase in mobile-based leads. With so many people out of work and wondering about their future, seeing an education ad and filling out a short contact form is an easy way to get back on track. Daily deal sites are also using mobile to get more signups from people interested in a good bargain.

Call Generation

With the fairly low cost of mobile traffic and recent developments in call tracking technology, call centers now have an entirely new source of potential leads. What better time to ask a consumer to call a call center than when they are already on the phone? All they have to do is tap a number and instantly they have become a potential customer. CornerBlue has been running pay-per-call campaigns for several companies, including a large home security company. By using the wealth of analytical information provided by our call tracking platform, we’ve been able to target specific combinations of region, time of day, phone model, and carrier that are most likely to buy a security system for their home. No other form of advertising provides such a wealth of targeted information to the advertiser.

There are millions of products and services yet to come to the mobile market, but in the coming years we will see an extreme surge of brands and businesses joining the mobile marketing industry. Every day, CornerBlue receives multiple requests for tailored mobile campaigns from new advertisers in different industries, and we apply our sales experience to target each mobile ad to the right consumer.

  1. Douglas says:

Hi. With respect to "lead generation", how much cheaper is mobile phone marketing per click than google adwords per click. And, if the lead gen led to a free downloadable e-book, how would the mobile customer access that book (i.e. how would I move tjem away from their mobile to the internet)? Thanks

  2. Looking for $1 million between $5 million for excellent ownership of quality writing and great audience!
