New LinkedIn feature aids job seekers

Posted by Greg Bardsley on May 13th, 2010 at 12:00 am

The business-oriented social networking site has made an update that allows users to "follow" companies in the same manner that Facebook users can be a "fan".

While the move is undoubtedly aimed at expanding LinkedIn's popularity, the update could open up doors for job seekers as well.

The "fan" feature allows companies to post updates when employees join or leave an organization. Hypothetically speaking, job seekers who follow a company would see this posting and apply for a job based on what is posted.

Just because the capability is there doesn't mean it's an automatic go, however, as employers would need to embrace the feature and input employee data in order to make the connection. The possibility is certainly there, however, as LinkedIn's audience is career-minded.

It's important to note that this is simply one avenue that LinkedIn's "follow" feature could go down. It'll be a matter of time before we discover the true capabilities of the new feature.
