The Federal Trade Commission has launched an online game (http://www.admongo.gov) that teaches kids how to identify advertisements in their surroundings.
While the subject matter may differ from the usual online kids game, Admongo is far from bland. Upon creating a profile, users create their own character and search through immersive environments to find advertisements.
After locating an ad in the level, kids will be prompted with a bonus question that, if answered correctly, will award the player with points. The goal of the game is to locate all of the ads and gain as many points as possible in the process.
The FTC has balanced the educational aspects of the game with a healthy dose of lever-pulling, platform-jumping, and enemy-crushing. These elements aren't enough to help you forget that you're playing an educational game, but it may be enough to perk interest.
Is Admongo going to be the talk of the playground? Uh, no. Come on, let's be real here. But imagine sitting in a classroom and being given the option of either listening to another mundane lecture or playing an interactive game.
I know what I'd choose.
