A perfect piece of puppy marketing

Last week, I spent a few hundred words ranting about the money wasted on a recent Friskies advertisement, in which a cat spends 60 seconds navigating an elaborately over-engineered CG wonderland.

Cute is cute, I argue. If you sell cat products, show me a kitten. Maybe a kitten doing something zany. Maybe a kitten just looking upsettingly adorable. Whatever. It will get the job done, and you won't waste the money on an entire digital effects team.

I guess the good people over at Pedigree agree. Because here's the beautiful creation that's lighting up the viral video charts today:

I love pretty much everything about this ad, not the least of which is the utter simplicity. And don't get me wrong -- I don't doubt that the stellar production value cost the company a few pennies. But in this case, each and every penny was properly allocated.
