I had the pleasure of speaking to a great group of music industry executives and promoters yesterday at Canadian Music Week in Toronto. The panel I moderated was called “Data is King” and we were to speak about using data to enhance the understanding, targeting, and results of digital media. The panelists included smart...

I've been analysing the performance of search within e-commerce sites for a while. I've found the need for a specific metric to assess performance here. I've come up with something I call the "Search Index." This is the number of searches as a ratio of retained visits. For example, if you had 100 retained visits, and 10...

After multiple years of Starcom/comScore's "Natural Born Clickers" study showing that clicks are coming from a smaller and smaller group of internet users - and a fairly defined demographic group at that - many clients still want CTR on their reports. Here we'll explore three easy ways to wean your client from the CTR metric for good. ...

There's a wonderful scene in Wall-E. All humans are aboard a ship, where computers and robots take care of every need. It's made the humans lazy, apathetic and blob-like. Then, after Wall-e has helped to discover that there is actually plant life growing on Earth, the Captain of the ship decides that it's time to go back....

Recently Brian Clifton wrote a critical item about a Clicktale article which he claimed was a rehash of an article by me - The Disturbing Inaccuracy Behind Google Analytics. You can see Brian's post here. If you compare my article with the Clicktale article, you'll see there's no connection at all. Trust me, if they had stolen...

Back in July in this Behavioral Insider article, Laurie Sullivan brought up what has been a vexing roadblock along the path to success in online ad targeting: how to manage the vast amounts of consumer data that can be collected by cookies and ad tags.
While there are many ways to deal with this thorny issue, the fact is it’s not...

I think comScore's partnership with Omniture may actually turn out to be a bigger deal for online marketers than the Adobe acquisition.
No doubt, it's been a big couple of weeks for audience measurement.
First off, Adobe buys Omniture, and not but a few days later, comScore and Omniture announce a partnership to...

Well, it would seem that we're back to the wild and wooly of technology deals. Adobe must have taken Bernanke at his word today when the Federal Reserve Chairman said that the recession is probably over. Adobe promptly whipped out their check book and just like that - acquired Omniture for $1.8 Billion.
This is a big price tag...

Digital marketing industry, Adobe (the guys that bring you Photoshop, Flash) had you in mind when they bought Omniture (leader in web analytics) for $1.8 billion today. In a statement, Adobe said they seek to "broaden solutions provided to the rapidly growing internet advertising, e-commerce and digital media markets."What does that really...

I'm thrilled to see Mikael has fixed the problem with his glorious Excel/Google Analytics system. It turns out the problem was not ampersands but the length of some of the data coming back from GA. Excel can only handle 255 characters per cell, but some URL's or keyword combinations can be longer than that, which caused the #VALUE!...

I've been playing with Mikael Thuneberg's wonderful MS Office/Google Analytics apps. He's being plugging Excel, and now Powerpoint, into Google Analytics so you draw numbers directly into your office apps without needing to copy/paste, or export. Mikael's done great work here, and is a great guy to chat with. If you present GA...

Did you see the trainwreck that was Heidi Montag at the 2009 Miss Universe Pageant? Um, okay....yeah, me neither - but that's what YouTube is for right? Mostly I'm just annoyed that she's now ruined one of my favorite Yaz Songs. It would seem that anybody can be a pop star these days. Everywhere you turn, reality-stars,...

I know, I've "Geek-ized" a pop sensation. I couldn’t help it. The temptation was too strong. It seems analytics has become the talk of the town in marketing. Everyone is discussing measurement and ROI and how analytics is helping them make better decisions about marketing spend.
However, as all contestants are not created equal, neither is...

Robert S. McNamara,
who died this week at 93, was the original metrics wonk. An early whiz
kid he pioneered the use of data to inform and direct the strategic
bombing initiative in Europe against the Nazis during World War II.
Subsequently he brought process discipline and data-driven decision-making to
Ford and to the business...
