Customers unsubscribe, but 20 percent of companies keep sending mail

It's happened to all of us. You unsubscribe from a mailing list, but the messages keep coming. And coming. And coming.
I've always thought it was maybe one in 100 companies that made this mistake, but it's a lot more than that. Twenty percent, according to a recent Return Path study (thank you Marketing Charts for the tip on this).
While most companies cut off the flow after a week or so, 11 percent of companies continue to send out email for 10 days after the unsubscribe request (a violation of CAN-SPAM, by the way). This can't be good for a brand's image. More broadly speaking, this can't be good for the email marketing segment of our industry.
